Health and Safety policy

Health and Safety Policy for Barnet Removals

Barnet Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, customers, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and relocation services. This policy sets out how we manage health and safety throughout our operations, including home moves, office relocations, packing, loading, transport and storage activities.

We recognise our duty to comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and to promote a culture where safety is an integral part of everyday work. Every member of our team is expected to take personal responsibility for working safely and for protecting others from harm.

Health and Safety Objectives

Our primary objectives are to prevent injury, ill health, property damage and environmental harm arising from our work. We aim to:

Identify, assess and control risks associated with moving, lifting, driving, storage and handling activities.

Provide safe systems of work, suitable equipment and appropriate protective measures.

Ensure all staff receive relevant information, instruction, training and supervision.

Maintain vehicles and equipment in a safe and roadworthy condition.

Promote continuous improvement in health and safety performance across all removal services.

Management Responsibilities

The management of Barnet Removals has overall responsibility for implementing this policy and ensuring that effective arrangements are in place. Managers will:

Set clear health and safety standards and communicate them to all staff.

Carry out and regularly review written risk assessments for typical removal activities.

Ensure that staff are competent for the work they undertake and receive ongoing training.

Provide appropriate tools, vehicles, safety equipment and personal protective equipment where required.

Investigate accidents, near misses and reports of unsafe conditions, and take corrective action.

Review this policy periodically and revise it as necessary in light of changes to legislation, business activities or best practice.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees of Barnet Removals share responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment. Employees must:

Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.

Follow all safety procedures, instructions and training provided by the company.

Use vehicles, tools, lifting aids and protective equipment correctly and report any defects immediately.

Avoid reckless behaviour, horseplay or shortcuts that could compromise safety.

Report accidents, incidents, near misses and hazards at the earliest opportunity.

Cooperate fully with any accident investigations, safety inspections or training programmes.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Before commencing removal work, our team will assess potential risks associated with the premises, access routes, parking, lifting tasks and customer goods. Where necessary, a site visit or pre-move assessment will be carried out.

We adopt safe systems of work that may include:

Planning access for vehicles to minimise reversing and avoid obstructing roads and pavements.

Using team lifting techniques and mechanical aids such as sack trucks, dollies or lifting straps for heavy or bulky items.

Ensuring clear walkways, adequate lighting and safe stacking of goods to prevent trips, slips and falls.

Assessing the structural suitability of staircases, balconies and lifts before moving large items.

Managing manual handling to reduce strain, overreaching and awkward postures.

Special attention is given to high-risk items such as pianos, safes, large appliances, fragile goods and items requiring disassembly and reassembly.

Vehicles, Driving and Transport Safety

Our vehicles are used extensively in our removal services and are subject to regular safety checks and maintenance schedules. We are committed to safe driving practices to protect our staff, customers and other road users.

We will:

Ensure that all drivers are properly licensed, competent and familiar with our vehicles.

Carry out daily pre-use vehicle checks and ensure defects are reported and rectified.

Secure loads safely to prevent movement of goods during transit.

Allow sufficient time for journeys to reduce the risk associated with rushing or fatigue.

Follow all road traffic laws, including speed limits and parking regulations.

Manual Handling and Lifting

Manual handling is a core part of removal work, and improper lifting can lead to serious injuries. To minimise these risks we will:

Provide manual handling and lifting training for all staff involved in moving goods.

Encourage the use of lifting aids and team lifts where practical.

Plan the route for large items before lifting to avoid obstacles and sudden changes of direction.

Discourage staff from lifting items that are beyond their capability or that cannot be moved safely.

Work at Height and Use of Equipment

Some removal tasks may involve work at height, such as loading high vehicles, using ramps or accessing upper floors. When such activities are necessary, they will be planned and controlled, using appropriate equipment such as step ladders, ramps and edge protection where applicable.

All equipment will be inspected regularly, and any damaged or unsuitable items will be removed from service immediately.

Customer and Public Safety

We take active steps to protect customers, visitors, neighbours and members of the public while providing our services. This includes:

Maintaining clear communication with customers about the timing and nature of our work.

Keeping access routes as clear as reasonably practicable during loading and unloading.

Using warning signs or verbal warnings where there is a short-term risk, such as moving large objects through shared areas.

Minimising noise, obstruction and disturbance around the property and on nearby roads.

Customers are asked to keep children and pets away from working areas and to avoid entering vehicles or interfering with equipment.

Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, injuries, work-related ill health and near misses must be reported to management without delay. We will record and, where required, report incidents in accordance with relevant legislation.

Our staff are briefed on emergency procedures, including what to do in the event of fire, road traffic incidents, spillages, property damage or injury. First aid provisions are maintained in our vehicles or at our operating base where appropriate.

Training, Communication and Consultation

Health and safety training is provided as part of induction for new staff and updated regularly. Training may include manual handling, safe driving, use of lifting equipment, hazard awareness and emergency procedures.

We encourage open communication on safety matters. Employees are invited to raise concerns, suggest improvements and participate in discussions about safe working practices. No one will be penalised for reporting genuine safety issues.

Policy Review

This health and safety policy is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains current, effective and aligned with our operations and legal obligations. Updated versions will be communicated to all staff and made available to customers on request.

By working together and following this policy, Barnet Removals aims to provide a professional, reliable and safe removal service for every move we undertake.
